Jamal made me suggest that my college age daughter invite a black friend of hers over one evening. I was told I had to cater to him, make sure he felt important and that he knew I was there to make his visit comfortable. When he arrived I invited him in and showed him to our family room. He looked around, then took the leather recliner. I asked him if I could get him anything to eat or drink, and he said he'd like a coke and some chips. My daughter came down and I expected him to jump up and get nervous, the way most the boys her age do around her. But he just sat there and sort of motioned for her pull a bean bag over and sit next to his chair. I was startled by how she just did exactly that. She is almost like a queen bee normally, with guys falling all over themselves to please her. I asked her if she wanted something to eat and she looked at him before she looked at me and said no thanks.

He asked her what my name was, then called me by my first name and asked me to get the TV controller for him. I went and got the snacks, napkins, etc. and brought them back. He was telling jokes to my daughter and she was giggling, and he was surfing the channels on TV at the same time. He didn't thank me, but said instead "That looks good Michelle." And then he told my daughter to have some...even though he had heard her say she didn't want any. And she immediately ate some chips.

This continued on all night. It wasn't that he was rude or obnoxious, he just acted like he was the most important person in the house. And that my daughter was just there for his amusement. And I was like a servant. It was almost dizzying the way someone the age of my own child was using my first name and treating me like I was hired help instead of the head of my household. It was like my own home...and even my daughter...had been "hijacked" from me. And I was too dazed to do anything about it.
