Hate to burst your bubble. But the practice is by no means unusual, or recent.
Murals and mosaics from Greco-Roman times have depicted women with a clean shaven pubic area, and we're talking here about at least 2 millenia back in time.
Islam, since the times of the Prophet (so about 1380 years ago), has required BOTH Men and Women remove their pubic hair.

You have a preference for hairy. That is your preference, but shaved is no less uncommon and by no means a phenomenon of the 20th or 21st century.
