Athletic Recruitment trip -true event in a memphis diner
Before I attending University in Florida, I was recruited by many Universities for their respective cross country / track and field programmes. I was invited by the Coach of Memphis State University (now University of Memphis) for an official visit. I taken around the University, shown the stadia, the halls, the dorms, the departments etc., On the second day myself, the head coach, assistant coach, a chaperone, and another student/athlete went to a diner for lunch. I was sitting facing the window so my back was to diner with the head coach directly in front of me....we were half way through our meal when the coach asks me how do I like my coffee. With my English accent and stupid grin I said "Like my Women - hot, black and strong." I giggled to myself and stopped to see that the others at the table were looking at me stone-faced. It wasn't what I said that was offensive - but slowly I turned around in my chair and standing behind me was the waitress holding the cafeteire.....Being a white, ginger haired fella I just blushed and didn't know what to say...when she leaned forward and said "You better, Honey." Well, the table roared with laughter, she filled my cup, and I sat there like a muppet......it was class, she didn't even blink an eyelid.....I did give her a generous tip for such great humour....
